For students majoring in psychology, sociology, and other behavioral sciences. Introduction to the basic statistical techniques and design methodologies used in behavioral sciences. Topics include descriptive statistics; probability and sampling distributions; statistical inference and power; linear correlation and regression; chi-square, t-tests, and ANOVA. Computations will be completed by hand and with the use of statistical software. Emphasis on the interpretation and relevance of statistical findings and the application of statistical concepts to real-world problems in the behavioral and social sciences.

How do we know what we know? This course develops students' analytical abilities and understanding of the fundamental importance of the social science research process in knowledge construction or how we come to "know" things, interpret the world, and move forward in ways that help us address issues, solve problems, and improve the human condition. The course is applicable to everyday citizens and social scientists alike and is relevant to people in all walks of life, not only social scientists. Students examine fundamental elements of empirical research and the ways in which sociologists, social scientists, academics, policy makers, community members, concerned citizens, and others approach, create, gather data, evaluate, critique, and interpret social research. Includes attention to the nature of theory, hypotheses, variables, and ethics of research. Application of qualitative and quantitative analytic tools, including logic and research design, such as survey, observational, experimental, case study, and comparative historical research. Emphasis on research design and statistical techniques, planning, experimental procedures, and the collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of data. Laboratory emphasis on group work, data entry, and analysis of data. Computer applications recommended.

Examines the social context of crime and deviance. Topics may include theories of crime and deviance; the criminal justice system; white collar, organized, and street crime; social class, race, ethnicity, sex, gender, and crime; and legal implications of crime and deviance. Socioeconomic and multicultural issues emphasized throughout the course. Sociological concepts of deviance and social control. Theories of structural conditions contributing to conformity and non-conformity will be explored.

Provides an overview of the American legal system, including its development, structure, and history. Review of the legal and judicial process in the United States, covering the adversarial system, the jurisdiction of federal and state courts, and the general process of judicial review. Explanation of different sources of law, including statutes, court cases, and administrative agency rules. Review of basic legal reasoning and introductory research methods. Introduction to civil law, criminal law, family law, real property law, contracts, employment, immigration, intellectual property, and other areas of law. Also included is a review of the principles of legal ethics, theories of jurisprudence, and practical problems of law enforcement and the administration of justice.

A survey of human behavior in relation to the social environment. This course provides an introduction to human sexuality through the lens of the sociological imagination, a core concept in sociology. Using key theoretical concepts from the discipline, the course traces the following: the social construction of sexuality; the socio-historical transformation of ideas about sex and sexuality as they relate to gender, race, disability, sexual practice, and sexual representation; social movements and activism in opposition to sexual inequalities; contemporary debates about social issues, such as reproductive justice and the commercialization of sex; and sexuality as mediated through major social institutions, such as the legal system, the economy, politics, the family, and religion. Students will critically analyze their own and others' attitudes toward sexuality with particular attention to the formation of sexual identities and ideologies within a societal and cross-cultural context.
