Student Learning Outcomes

- Students will be able to examine and discuss the importance of families in the lives of adolescents.
- Students will be able to identify ways for families and primary caregivers to be involved in the lives of adolescents.
Description
Introduces families and caregivers to the importance of family in the lives of adolescents and best practices in parenting, and links students to resources. Emphasis placed on family engagement linked to learning and student success; leadership; accessing resources; and navigating systems in multicultural communities. This course helps prepare students for credit courses in child development. May be offered bilingually.
Course Objectives
The student will be able to:
- discuss the importance of family in the lives of adolescents
- identify ways for parents to be involved and leaders in their adolescents' lives
- utilize family, community and educational resources
Course Content
This course will encompass several parenting education areas focused on the adolescent years:
- The importance of family
- Values, goals and dreams
- Cultural identity and traditions
- Family strengths
- Parent involvement and leadership
- Importance of fathers and male role models
- Supporting adolescent's learning and education, Common Core, STEAM, parent-teacher conferences, IEPs
- Building community-support networks for parents and families
- Accessing family, community and educational resources and navigating systems
- Family literacy resources and local libraries
- Agencies and services for children with special needs
- Career and professional growth opportunities
- Navigating the California education system through Foothill College Student Services
- Educational opportunities—ESL, GED, CD Academy, STEM Camp
- Family and community events

- Example reading assignment: In What Makes Your Family Strong? The Five Protective Factors handout (English and Spanish): "The reality is hard times, adversity, misfortune, difficulties… whatever you call it, your family is sure to face it at one time or another. The good news is the risks you and your children face DO NOT define you as a family—Five Protective Factors DO!" Read handout, consider the protective factors in your family and be prepared to discuss them within small groups
- Example writing assignment: Journal how you as a parent have become more engaged with your adolescent over the four weeks of the course
