Student Learning Outcomes

  • Perform the required technique of intermediate choreography for performance while exhibiting proper body placement, coordination, flexibility and stage presence.
  • Students will have practical experience in the production aspects of dance for performance.

Description

Continuation into the intermediate-level concepts of choreography and dance composition. Students will be given the opportunity to create intermediate original dance works for individuals and groups to be performed in front of a live audience. Includes intermediate dance technique and practice of complex choreography.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:
A. perform the choreography of intermediate level technique
B. define the traditional vocabulary of steps in a particular technique, such as ballet
C. explain the progression and purpose of the specific order of steps in exercises or choreography
D. analyze the historical development of specific genres of choreography
E. increase body awareness and confidence
F. apply the concepts of proper alignment and placement in all choreography
G. recognize dance as both a physical discipline and artistic expression
H. appreciate music as an integral part of choreography performance

A. Art of creating dance for intermediate dancer:
1. Theme
2. Music or other accompaniment
3. Development of style and period
4. Stylistic consistency
5. Choreographic devices
6. Form and composition
7. Use of props and sets
B. Rehearsal process:
1. Musical score and counting methodology
2. Teaching skills
3. Staging
C. Pre-production
1. Call board procedures
2. Music editing and reproduction
3. Costuming and lighting concepts
4. Program order for aesthetics and practical considerations
5. Publicity
6. Ticket sales and promotions
D. Performance skills:
1. Intermediate-level character building
2. Developing character and stage presence
E. Production evaluation:
1. Criteria for analyzing and judging aesthetic merits of a dance
2. Assessing pre-production elements of a dance performance

Lab Content

A. Demonstration and practice of proper body awareness and alignment in all choreography and exercises.
B. Demonstration of heightened physical, vocal, rhythmic abilities for a live performance or staging.
C. Demonstration and practice, at intermediate level, the mastery of choreography for performance.

Special Facilities and/or Equipment

A. Dance studio, rehearsal space or theatre.
B. Audio sound system.
C. Appropriate shoes, exercise clothing or costume as required by technique of dance.
