Program Description
The Certificate of Completion in English as a Second Language for Child Development prepares students for child development coursework at the community college and is intended for parents and students interested in employment in education or childcare industries. Students will be exposed to vocabulary and grammar essential to working with children. Focus is on improving communication and fluency in a childcare setting through developing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills alongside an improved understanding of American culture, families, and educational systems.

Program Learning Outcomes
- Upon completion of the certificate students will be proficient in basic field-specific childcare vocabulary: vocabulary related to safety and accident prevention, illnesses and injuries, infant care and development, toddler care and development, preschoolers' care and development, as well as school-age children's care and development, responsibilities, and emotions.
- Upon completion of the certificate students will be proficient in basic English communication and language functions utilized in childcare settings and with children.
- Upon completion of the certificate students will be proficient in understanding and/or completing school emergency forms and typical incident reports.
- Upon completion of the certificate students will be proficient in writing short messages about a child or children with grammatical accuracy.
- Upon completion of the certificate students will be proficient in describing children's abilities, activities, routines, schedules, accidents, injuries, ailments, and symptoms.
