Non-Credit: English as a Second Language-Beginning
Program Description
The Certificate of Competency in English as a Second Language - Beginning prepares students to advance to higher levels of ESL, both credit and noncredit, by providing foundations in basic English language skills. Students will be exposed to integrated skills courses and learn such practical skills as: demonstrate understanding of spoken English at the advanced-beginning level; communicate using advanced-beginning level English; speak intelligibly; ask and answer questions intelligibly; talk about present, past, and future experiences intelligibly; read sentences and paragraphs at the advanced (high)-beginning level; demonstrate recognition of basic corpus of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions; demonstrate ability to read critically; write sentences and paragraphs at the advanced (high)-beginning level; and demonstrate knowledge of advanced (high)-beginning level grammar.

Program Learning Outcomes
- The student will be prepared to do Level 2 noncredit course work.
- The student will be able to write affirmative and negative statements in simple present, present progressive, simple past, and future, as well as formulate questions and answers to express advice, requests, desires, offers, and necessity.
