Student Learning Outcomes

  • State indications, contraindications, hazards, and methods of evaluating effectiveness of all therapies administered.
  • Relate basic diagnostic data to respiratory therapy techniques and the patient's illness.

Description

Introduction to various hospital departments, focusing on the practical implementation of respiratory therapy techniques. Students will learn to analyze fundamental diagnostic information and its relevance to treatment strategies in the clinical setting. Intended for students in the Respiratory Therapy Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate ability to effectively read a patient's chart and give a patient report.
  2. Demonstrate correct technique for compressed gas handling.
  3. Demonstrate aseptic technique for cleaning and sterilizing equipment.
  4. Demonstrate competency while performing a complete chest examination on a patient.
  5. Demonstrate correct techniques for delivery of oxygen, humidity, and mist therapy.
  6. Demonstrate correct technique for incentive spirometry.
  7. Demonstrate correct technique for intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB).
  8. Demonstrate correct technique for chest physiotherapy.
  9. Demonstrate correct technique for set up and delivery of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation.
  10. Demonstrate correct technique for set up and delivery of invasive positive pressure ventilation, being able to manage one ventilator patient.
  11. Demonstrate correct technique for administration of medications via aerosol.

Types and/or Examples of Required Reading, Writing, and Outside of Class Assignments

Students are expected to complete ICU worksheets to demonstrate their understanding of each of their patients' conditions and treatments. These worksheets include writing of narratives on the assessment and therapy plan for each patient.
