Description

Information gathering and decision making in the management of patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions. Intended for students in the Respiratory Therapy program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:
A. Obtain patient data, evaluate patient data and make recommendations
B. Manipulate equipment by order or protocol including infection and quality control
C. Initiate and modify therapeutic procedures
D. Show competence in managing various respiratory disorders by successfully completing information gathering and decision making segments of clinical simulations

A. Review patient data and make recommendations
1. Patient history
2. Physical examination
3. Laboratory data
4. Pulmonary function results
5. Blood gas results
6. Imaging studies
7. Monitoring data
8. Cardiac monitoring
9. Maternal and perinatal /neonatal history and data
10. Sleep study results
11. Inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation
12. Patient interview
13. Patient's learning needs
14. Review radiographs
15. Perform procedures
16. Interpret procedure results
17. Recommend procedures to obtain additional data
B. Equipment manipulation, infection and quality control
1. Manipulate equipment by order
2. Ensure infection control
3. Perform quality control procedures
C. Initiation and modification of therapeutic procedures
1. Maintain records and communicate information
2. Maintain a patent airway including care of artificial airways
3. Remove bronchopulmonary secretions
4. Achieve adequate respiratory support
5. Evaluate patient's response to respiratory care
6. Independently modify procedures based on patient response
7. Recommend modifications to the patient's care plan
8. Initiate, conduct or modify respiratory care techniques in an emergency setting
9. Act as an assistant to the physician performing special procedures
10. Initiate and conduct pulmonary rehabilitation and home care

Lab Content

A. The student will review patient data and make recommendations based on information such as:
1. Patient history
2. Physical examination
3. Laboratory data
4. Pulmonary function results
5. Blood gas results
6. Imaging studies including radiographs
7. Monitoring data and vital signs
8. Cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring
9. Maternal and perinatal /neonatal history and data
10. Sleep study results
11. Inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation
12. Patient interview

B. Based on data gathered the student will recommend the following:
1. Respiratory Therapy Procedures
2. Additional studies and lab work
3. Recommend other procedures to obtain additional data
C. The student shall be able to demonstrate equipment manipulation, infection and quality control such as:
1. Manipulate equipment by order
2. Ensure infection control
3. Perform quality control procedures
C. Initiation and modification of therapeutic procedures
