Student Learning Outcomes

  • The student will be able to create and plan an independent study project in psychology.
  • The student will be able to conduct the study by means of reviewing the research literature, running research participants, entering and analyzing data, writing a research paper, creating a research poster, or any other means mutually agreed upon in the student-faculty contract as appropriate in the field of psychology.

Description

Provides an opportunity for the student to expand their studies in Psychology beyond the classroom by completing a project or an assignment arranged by agreement between the student and instructor. The student is required to contract with the instructor to determine the scope of assignment and the unit value assigned for successful completion. Students may take a maximum of 6 units of Independent Study per department.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Plan an independent study project in Psychology.
  2. Conduct the study by means of literature research, survey research, fieldwork, or laboratory work, or other means mutually agreed upon in the student-faculty contract as appropriate for the discipline.
  3. Present the results of the study project in a written or oral report or by some other means as determined by the contract.

When taught as an online distance learning section, students and faculty need ongoing and continuous internet and email access.

Method(s) of Evaluation

Methods of Evaluation may include but are not limited to the following:

Evaluation is based on the completion of the scope of work described in the student-faculty contract. Students and faculty will work collaboratively to determine methods for showcasing students' learning, which may include oral presentations, photo voice, e-portfolio, APA style papers, posters, and other academically relevant activities

Method(s) of Instruction

Methods of Instruction may include but are not limited to the following:

Independent study as defined in the student-faculty contract; methods may include:
1. Meeting regularly to discuss research topic
2. Assigning and discussing empirical articles
3. Analysis of data on SPSS statistical software
4. Discussion of statistical analyses
5. Preparation for professional research conference

Text and/or research articles will vary with content, with regard to the student project.

Types and/or Examples of Required Reading, Writing, and Outside of Class Assignments

This course could include any of the following activities:

  1. Completing a literature review
  2. Conducting a study using a variety of different methodologies, including survey research, participatory action research, cross-cultural studies, the experimental method, fieldwork, or laboratory work, or other methods mutually agreed upon in the student-faculty contract as appropriate for the discipline
  3. Other types of projects that have academic and/or personal value to the student and are appropriate for the discipline of psychology
