Student Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate and explain proper shooting technique and mental preparation.
  • Perform with increased proficiency the techniques for successful archery. (rubric - physical checklist)


Introduction to Olympic archery using the recurve bow. Includes building a good basic foundation for shooting using the recurve bow through the utilization and practice of various skill development techniques.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Identify the parts of the bow, tackle
  2. Know the rules of archery
  3. Know the etiquette of archery
  4. Demonstrate good shooting technique
  5. Demonstrate basic training/methodology techniques
  6. Observe and analyze basic shooting technique
  7. Appreciate and value the sport of archery as a component of lifelong physical activity

Special Facilities and/or Equipment

1. Archery facility, portable targets, arrow back drop net, bows, arrows, tabs, arm guards, and bow racks.
2. When taught as an online distance learning or hybrid section, students and faculty need ongoing and continuous internet and email access. Students may need to secure their own access to equipment specific to the sport.

Method(s) of Evaluation

Methods of Evaluation may include but are not limited to the following:

Physical skills and techniques will be assessed by direct instructor observation and peer interaction activities
Written and/or final examination will test knowledge of:
1. Terminology of archery
2. Techniques of proper shooting (student demonstration, explanation)
3. Selection of proper equipment

Although this text is older than the suggested "5 years or newer" standard, it remains a seminal text in this area of study.
