Description

A just-in-time approach to core prerequisite skills, competencies, and concepts needed in Statistics. Intended for students who are concurrently enrolled in STAT C1000 for the Math Performance Success program (MPS) at Foothill College. Topics include a review of skills, including percents, rounding, order of operations, interpretation of graphs, solving linear equations, and applying formulas.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Explore topics related to developing effective learning skills.
  2. Solve problems involving percents.
  3. Round numbers.
  4. Apply the order of operations.
  5. Analyze graphs.
  6. Solve equations.
  7. Apply formulas.
  8. Use technology, such as graphing calculators and/or computer software, to assist in solving problems involving any of the topics in (2) through (7) above.
  9. Discuss mathematical problems and write solutions in accurate mathematical language and notation.
  10. Interpret mathematical solutions.

    2. Self-assess using performance criteria to judge and improve one's own work
      1. Analyze and correct errors on one's exam
      2. Self-assess one's understanding of specific mathematical concepts
      3. Develop and execute a plan to deepen understanding
    3. Identify, utilize, and evaluate the effectiveness of resources in improving one's own learning, such as study groups, computer resources, lab resources, and tutoring resources
  2. Solve problems involving percents
    1. Convert from decimals to percents
    2. Convert from percent to decimals
    3. Convert from fractions to decimals
  3. Round numbers
    1. Perform traditional rounding
    2. Round up to the next largest whole number
  4. Apply the order of operations
    1. Use PEM/DA/S
  5. Analyze graphs
    1. Scale axes
    2. Identify what is represented by the vertical and horizontal axes
    3. Read a number line
  6. Solve equations
    1. Solve linear equations
    2. Solve quadratic equations
  7. Apply formulas
    1. Recognize symbols
    2. Substitute applicable number for symbol
  8. Use technology, such as graphing calculators and/or computer software, to assist in solving problems involving any of the topics in (2) through (7) above

  9. Discuss mathematical problems and write solutions in accurate mathematical language and notation
