Student Learning Outcomes

  • Describe common trenching and excavation hazards and appropriate corrective actions, and explain why trenching activities are considered high_risk operations
  • Identify basic access and egress requirements for trenches, including ladder placement, spacing, and safe entry and exit practices

Description

This course covers topics related to trenching and excavation hazard awareness, covering basic access/egress, fall protection, hazardous atmospheres, soil conditions, and protective systems.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an awareness-level understanding of the hazards associated with trenching and excavation activities.
  2. Recognize common trench and excavation hazards, understand the importance of protective systems, and follow safe practices related to access/egress, fall protection, and hazardous atmospheres, in accordance with CEI and OSHA guidelines.
  3. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to serve as a Competent Person for trenching and excavation activities once they pass the Competent Person Training, qualifying them to make safety decisions and ensure compliance with CEI policies and OSHA requirements on excavation sites.

Course Content

  1. 5 hours training for Trenching and Excavation - Competent Person
    1. Overview of trenching and excavation hazards (e.g., cave-ins, falls, utility strikes)
    2. OSHA standards and CEI policies governing excavation work (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P)
    3. Responsibilities of the Competent Person
    4. Soil mechanics and classification methods (visual/manual tests)
    5. Selection and use of protective systems (sloping, shoring, shielding)
    6. Access and egress requirements
    7. Inspection procedures before and during shifts and after weather events
    8. Hazard identification and corrective actions; documentation and communication of safety decisions
  2. 7.5 hours training for Trenching and Excavation Competent Person - T-t-T
    1. Comprehensive and advanced training tailored for Train-the-Trainer
  3. 2.5 hours training for Trenching and Excavation Hazard Awareness
    1. Introduction to trenching and excavation hazards
    2. Basic access and egress requirements (ladder spacing, safe entry/exit)
    3. Fall protection around trench edges; recognition of hazardous atmospheres (oxygen deficiency, toxic gases)
    4. Overview of soil types and their impact on trench stability
    5. Awareness of protective systems (sloping, shoring, shielding)
    6. Signs of trench failure and when to report concerns
    7. CEI safety expectations and reporting procedures
    8. Worker roles in supporting trench safety

1. When taught in person, this training must be conducted in a clean classroom with internet access, necessary hardware and software, and course materials, if applicable.
2. When taught online, this course requires access to CEI's Learning Management System (Amplify), continuous access to a computer with the necessary software and hardware to view video content, and a reliable intranet connection.
