Description
This course covers the potential source(s) of Valley Fever spores and preventative measures to control dust generation.
Course Objectives
The student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of Valley Fever, including how the illness is contracted, the potential environmental sources of the spores, and the preventative measures used to minimize dust exposure on job sites.
- Identify high-risk conditions, follow dust control procedures, and take appropriate steps to protect oneself and others.
Course Content
- Introduction to Valley Fever (Coccidioidomycosis) and its health effects
- Identification of environmental conditions and geographic areas where spores are commonly found
- Modes of transmission through inhalation of disturbed soil/dust
- Dust control procedures (e.g., water application, soil stabilizers, minimizing ground disturbance)
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in dusty conditions
- Signage and restricted access zones
- Employee responsibilities in reporting symptoms and maintaining control measures
- Regulatory background and specific prevention policies
