Description

This course covers topics related to the proper and safe use of hand tools and hand-held power tools, including appropriate personal protective equipment.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Identify and classify various types of hand tools and handheld power tools commonly used in construction and other industries.
  2. Understand the specific hazards associated with each type of tool.
  3. Perform pre-use inspections of hand and power tools to identify defects and ensure safe operation.
  4. Select the appropriate tool for the task at hand.
  5. Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively, following manufacturer's instructions and established safety procedures.
  6. Understand the importance of proper tool maintenance, including cleaning, sharpening, and storage.
  7. Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for specific tool operations.
  8. Recognize and control hazardous conditions in the work area that may affect tool safety.
  9. Comply with relevant Federal OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations related to hand and power tool safety.
  10. Respond appropriately in the event of a tool-related injury or accident.

Course Content

  1. Importance of hand and power tool safety, common hand tool and power tool accidents and injuries, and relevant OSHA standards
  2. Classification of hand tools; safe use of specific hand tools; hand tool hazards; proper selection, inspection, and maintenance of hand tools
  3. Classification of power tools, safe use of specific power tools, power tool hazards, and safe operating procedures for each type of power tool, specifically: electric tools, pneumatic tools, hydraulic tools, powder-actuated tools, fuel-powered tools
  4. Hazard assessment and personal protective equipment (PPE) selection; types of PPE for hand and power tool operations; proper use, care, and maintenance of PPE
  5. Tool maintenance and storage; removal of damaged or defective tools from service
  6. Identifying and evaluating workplace hazards, implementing hazard controls, and housekeeping and organization
  7. Responding to tool-related injuries, first aid and medical treatment, and emergency shutdown procedures

1. When taught in person, this training must be conducted in a clean classroom with internet access, necessary hardware and software, and course materials, if applicable.
2. When taught online, this course requires access to CEI's Learning Management System (Amplify), continuous access to a computer with the necessary software and hardware to view video content, and a reliable intranet connection.
