Student Learning Outcomes
- Direct traffic flow using a stop/slow paddle and standard hand signals
- Set up a temporary traffic control zone compliant with state/local regulations
- Position oneself to ensure an escape route is always available
- Communicate effectively with other flaggers and motorists to prevent accidents
Description
This course covers topics related to becoming a qualified traffic flagger.
Course Objectives
The student will be able to:
- Follow safety instruction on principles and techniques of flagging.
- Direct traffic safely and effectively using hand signals and flagging devices.
- Identify and respond to potential hazards.
Course Content
- Safety principles and responsibilities of a traffic flagger
- Techniques for directing and controlling traffic using hand signals, stop/slow paddles, and other flagging devices
- Communication with other flaggers and work crews; identifying and responding to potential traffic and work zone hazards
- High-visibility clothing and PPE
- Overview of state-specific flagger certification requirements; review and practice of flagging scenarios; written and/or practical certification exam
