Description
In accordance with Federal OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l), 29 CFR 1926.602(d), and Cal/OSHA 8 CCR §3668 requirements, this course provides certification for individuals who operate a Class 3 electric-powered, pedestrian-controlled forklift, such as walkies and walkie-riders.
Course Objectives
The student will be able to:
- Identify the types and functions of Class 3 walkie and walkie-rider trucks.
- Understand OSHA regulations and employer responsibilities under 29 CFR 1910.178(l).
- Demonstrate safe operating procedures, including starting, stopping, and maneuvering.
- Conduct pre-operation inspections and identify maintenance needs.
- Recognize workplace hazards, such as pedestrian traffic, ramps, and tight aisles.
- Safely handle loads, including stacking, unstacking, and transporting.
- Apply proper battery charging and maintenance procedures.
- Pass a written knowledge test and hands-on performance evaluation.

- 1.5 hours training for Forklift Class 3 (Walkie/Walkie-Rider) Operator
- OSHA 1910.178(l) training requirements
- Types and classifications of Class 3 trucks
- Operating instructions, warnings, and precautions
- Controls and instrumentation
- Load handling and stability principles
- Visibility and maneuvering in confined spaces
- Battery charging and maintenance
- Workplace-specific hazards (e.g., ramps, loading docks, pedestrian zones)
- Operator and employer responsibilities
- 0.5 hour training for Forklift Class 3 (Walkie/Walkie-Rider) Operator Renewal
- An abbreviated version intended to renew a former operator
Lab Content
- Pre-operation inspection and safety checklist.
- Safe operation in tight spaces and around pedestrians.
- Load handling and transport.
- Emergency procedures and safe shutdown.
- Battery charging station safety.
