Student Learning Outcomes
- Identify the components and operating functions of Class I electric forklifts
- Conduct thorough pre-operation inspections and battery maintenance procedures
- Maneuver the forklift safely in tight spaces, ramps, and around pedestrian traffic
- Demonstrate proper load handling and stability principles (Stability Triangle)
Description
In accordance with Federal OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l), 29 CFR 1926.602(d), and Cal/OSHA 8 CCR §3668 requirements, this course provides certification for individuals who operate a Class 1 electric motor forklift.
Course Objectives
The student will be able to:
- Identify the components and functions of Class 1 electric forklifts.
- Understand OSHA regulations and employer responsibilities under 29 CFR 1910.178(l).
- Demonstrate safe operating procedures, including starting, maneuvering, lifting, and parking.
- Conduct pre-operation inspections and identify maintenance needs.
- Recognize workplace hazards and environmental conditions that affect forklift operation.
- Safely perform battery charging and maintenance procedures.
- Apply proper load handling techniques and understand load stability principles.
- Pass a written test and hands-on performance evaluation.
Course Content
- 2.5 hours training for Forklift Class 1 (Electric) Operator
- Overview of OSHA 1910.178(l) requirements
- Operating instructions, warnings, and precautions
- Controls and instrumentation
- Visibility and load handling
- Stability triangle and load center concepts
- Battery charging and recharging procedures
- Workplace-specific hazards (e.g., ramps, narrow aisles, pedestrian traffic)
- Safety devices and warning systems
- Operator responsibilities and employer obligations
- 0.5 hour training for Forklift Class 1 (Electric) Operator Renewal
- An abbreviated version intended to renew a former operator
Lab Content
- Pre-operation inspection and checklist.
- Safe start-up and shutdown procedures.
- Maneuvering in tight spaces and around obstacles.
- Lifting, stacking, and un-stacking loads.
- Emergency procedures and safe parking.
- Battery maintenance and charging station safety.
