Student Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze electrical hazards, including shock and arc flash boundaries
  • Establish an electrically safe work condition (ESWC) utilizing LOTO procedures
  • Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) based on hazard risk categories
  • Execute the CEI energized electrical permit process and MOP (Method of Procedure)

Description

This training course will teach the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. With emphasis on LOTO, CEI permit process and CEI energized electrical hazard work flowchart and MOPs, delivered per code cycle.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Understand what constitutes a practical safe working area for employees relative to the hazards arising from the use of electricity.
  2. Navigate the NFPA 70E standard.
  3. Put electrical systems into a ESWC (electrical safe working condition), and explain exceptions to an ESWC.
  4. Calculate the electrical hazards and the mitigations methods to protect employees with special rated PPE.

  1. NFPA 70E standard overview
    1. Introduction to NFPA 70E and its purpose
  2. CEI's energized electrical hazard flowchart and electrical permit process
  3. CEI's LOTO protocols, requirements, and process
  4. Contact release program
  5. Introduction to the Method of Procedure (MOP)
    1. When to use it and how to fill out

Special Facilities and/or Equipment

1. When taught in-person, clean classroom with monitor and printed material for students to take as reference materials.
2. When taught online, this course requires access to CEI's Learning Management System (Amplify), ongoing access to a computer with the necessary software and hardware to view video content, and a reliable intranet connection.
