Description

This course provides an introduction to CEI's Building Information Modeling (BIM) process. Using the CEI BIM flowchart as a guide, students will gain a clear understanding of responsibilities, workflows, and key actions throughout each phase of the BIM process. This foundational knowledge supports effective coordination and collaboration across project teams.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Identify the owners, stakeholders, and escalation path for each phase of the BIM workflow.
  2. Understand schedule management expectations.
  3. Describe the potential pitfalls and red flags to look for during each phase of the BIM process.
  4. Demonstrate the different roles needed in driving effective communication and coordination between BIM stakeholders.
  5. Partner with the BIM department and PM team to establish and agree upon a BIM scope and budget.

Course Content

  1. Overview of Building Information Modeling (BIM)
    1. What is BIM and why it matters
  2. Understanding the BIM flowchart
    1. Walk-through of the BIM flowchart layout
    2. Explanation of phases: design, coordination, pre-construction, construction, closeout
    3. Key decision points and process milestones
  3. Roles and responsibilities in the BIM process
    1. Overview of stakeholders: owner, PM, BIM coordinator, engineers, trade partners, etc.
    2. Responsibilities at each phase of the process
    3. Escalation paths and communication protocols
  4. Applying BIM knowledge to enhance collaboration
    1. Strategies for improving coordination between BIM stakeholders
    2. Handling common BIM challenges and pitfalls

Special Facilities and/or Equipment

1. When taught in-person, clean classroom with monitor and printed material for students to take as reference materials.
2. When taught online, this course requires access to CEI's Learning Management System (Amplify), ongoing access to a computer with the necessary software and hardware to view video content, and a reliable intranet connection.
3. Access to BIM application.
