Description

Continuation of EMS 60A. Airway anatomy and management, EKG, 12 leads and implement treatments for various respiratory emergencies. Neurological disorders, cardiovascular emergencies, musculoskeletal injuries and treatment, GI/GU anatomy and disorders. Intended for students in the Paramedic Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the airway anatomy and use of various airway adjuncts.
  2. Perform a competent patient assessment on a medical and trauma patient with an understanding of various system functions.
  3. Exhibit an understanding of various medical conditions that affect the patient.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the cardiovascular system, including EKG, and exhibit knowledge of various cardiac disorders.
  5. Demonstrate a knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the neurological system and have an understanding of various neurological disorders.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of the endocrine system and a variety of disorders associated with this system.
  7. Exhibit a knowledge of the GI/GU system. Have an understanding of the various disorders associated with the GI/GU system.
  8. Exhibit a knowledge of the renal system. Have an understanding of the various disorders associated with the renal urogenital system.
  9. Exhibit a knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and discuss the various splinting devices to stabilize fractures of various anatomical structures.
  10. Demonstrate an understanding of the various skin disorders and cancers.

Methods of Evaluation may include but are not limited to the following:

Written tests: multiple choice, matching, essays, fill-in-the-blank, short answer
Assignments: workbooks that accompany texts, matching, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, identify, ambulance calls, true/false, short answer, word find, place photos in order, fill-in-the-table, problem solving, labeling diagram
National-style paramedic affective evaluation: observe student behavior, document, and counsel student

Types and/or Examples of Required Reading, Writing, and Outside of Class Assignments

  1. Read 1-6 chapters per week throughout the quarter on paramedic: anatomy and physiology, cardiology, electrocardiogram, electrophysiology, etc. Weekly reading assignments 60-100 pages
  2. Writing assignments: weekly essays are assigned relative to different patient medical and traumatic situations
  3. Workbook/writing assignments are given each week, e.g., matching, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank
