Student Learning Outcomes

  • Recognize normal and abnormal anatomical structures.
  • Obtain pertinent studies, reports, lab values as they relate to the examination.
  • Perform ultrasound exams according to the Scope of Practice for sonographer's identified by the SDMS and according to recognized examination protocols.

Description

Fifth course in the DMS 70 clinical rotation series. Preceptorship to obtain technical expertise with emphasis on the advanced-graduate mastery of knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform sonographic studies and procedures. Emphasis is on final competencies leading to program completion. Intended for students in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Perform advanced examinations and procedures in a timely manner
  2. Describe clinical history, physical findings, and laboratory data for all types of patient procedures and examinations
  3. Operate different types of ultrasound equipment required for the advanced procedures
  4. Demonstrate professionalism in all aspects of delivering patient-centered care
  5. Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients and clinical preceptors
  6. Demonstrate professional behavior in the clinical setting

Course Content

This course is a clinical preceptorship with the student assigned to a hospital or other qualified medical facility. It is designed as an integrative approach.

  1. Advanced level clinical examinations and procedures
    1. Gynecology
    2. Obstetrics - level 1 and level 2
    3. Abdominal examinations
    4. Invasive applications
    5. Vascular applications
    6. Sterile trays and instruments
    7. Patient identification
    8. Patient data, including medical history and laboratory data relevant to the invasive procedure
  2. Clinical data
    1. Medical clinical history
    2. Physical findings
    3. Laboratory findings
    4. Data applications
  3. Sonography protocols and procedures
    1. Gynecology
    2. Obstetrics
    3. Abdominal applications
  4. Sonographic examinations
    1. Uncomplicated abdominal examinations
    2. Uncomplicated gynecological examinations
    3. Uncomplicated obstetrical examinations for the first trimester
    4. Uncomplicated obstetrical examinations for the second trimester
    5. Uncomplicated obstetrical examinations for the third trimester
  5. Computer calculations
    1. Various computer calculations per patient examination
    2. Key functions and knobology of each ultrasound system
    3. Improve the sonographic image using the appropriate key functions
    4. Image quality based on accepted criteria and image assessment
  6. Communication skills
    1. Verbal
    2. Non-verbal
    3. Culturally sensitive aspects with patients, physicians, and clinical preceptors
    4. Effective communication skills with physicians and clinical preceptors

Method(s) of Evaluation

Methods of Evaluation may include but are not limited to the following:

Clinical case presentations as presented orally, with demonstration and written assignment. Assessment will include clinical research conducted prior to presentation
Skills and performance testing and evaluation by observation of performance
Clinical competency and proficiency assessment will be conducted at mid-quarter and end of quarter
Behavioral objectives evaluated by written form and observation
Site visits in the clinical facility by faculty
