Student Learning Outcomes

  • The student will critically evaluate alternative practice opportunities for a dental hygienists and the potential impact on oral health disparities.
  • The student will prepare a scientific poster on a community dental health program.


Continuation of D H 326B. Course includes four weeks of outside field work to assess and analyze a target group, design lesson plans/program activities and present to target group, and evaluation of program outcomes. Career options for registered dental hygienists and scientific communication formats will also be discussed. Intended for students in the Dental Hygiene Baccalaureate Degree Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Lab Content

Students will fulfill lab hours by implementing original dental health program with designated target group. Students will also engage in various community outreach projects including educating underserved populations (including developmentally delayed teens, children enrolled in migrant education, senior citizens, and children in lower socioeconomic areas) on oral health and related topics and participating in school-based dental screenings.

A. Classroom with multimedia equipment.
B. Materials to create visual aids, interactive games and worksheets to provide oral health education in the community.
C. Oral health supplies and aids to distribute at community outreach events.

Written report on community dental health project: method of evaluation, statistical analysis of program data, conclusions of program outcomes

Types and/or Examples of Required Reading, Writing, and Outside of Class Assignments

A. Reading assignment: 16 page scientific journal article on mid-level providers in the delivery of oral health care.
B. Writing assignment: 3-4 page paper discussing community dental health program outcomes including assessment data analysis and method of evaluation.
C. Outside of class assignment: develop a scientific poster according to guidelines of community dental health program and outcomes and present to peers.
D. Community service assignment: group participation in community outreach programs (providing oral health education to underserved populations) and school-based dental screenings.
