Student Learning Outcomes
- Identify the anatomical components of the junctional epithelium and surrounding tissues on an unlabeled illustration, and analyze the functional roles of these structures in maintaining periodontal health and preventing disease progression.
- List, describe, and differentiate periodontal diseases using the current classification system established by the American Academy of Periodontology.
Description
Course Objectives
The student will be able to:
A. List, recognize and describe the functions of the four tissues that make up the periodontium.
B. Compare and contrast the clinical and histological characteristics of the periodontium in health and disease.
C. Discuss the classification and progression of periodontal diseases.
D. Analyze the etiology of periodontal diseases, including: oral biofilms, local contributing factors, immunity, inflammation, host response to periodontal pathogens, systemic factors, smoking, and host risk factors.
E. Categorize and contrast the various types/classifications of gingival diseases and periodontal diseases using the AAP classification of periodontal disease system.
F. Explain the procedures for a comprehensive periodontal examination.

1. Pathogenesis of bone destruction and periodontal pockets

C. Etiology of periodontal diseases
1. Oral biofilms and periodontal infections

3. Basic concepts of immunity and inflammation
4. Host immune response to periodontal pathogens
5. Systemic factors associated with periodontal diseases
6. Smoking and periodontal disease
7. Risk factors of periodontitis
D. Gingival diseases
1. Clinical features of the gingiva
2. Diseases of the gingiva
E. Periodontitis
1. Chronic periodontitis
2. Aggressive periodontitis
3. Other periodontal conditions
4. Periodontitis as a risk factor for systemic disease
