Student Learning Outcomes

  • The student will present one modification to care for a hearing impaired patient.
  • The student will demonstrate the appropriate method in which to escort a visually impaired patient.

Description

Discussion and development of techniques and/or equipment needed to meet the needs of special patient populations. Intended for students in the Dental Assisting Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:
A. Dental Assisting Theory and Practice
1. Describe and/or demonstrate adaptions in patient positioning or educational approaches, and chairside assisting techniques necessary in the performance of dental services for patients with special needs
2. List and describe oral conditions which are associated with special patient populations
3. Explain methods of communication for special patient populations
B. Infection Control and Hazardous Waste Management
1. Recognize infection control issues and potential cross contamination problems which can arise in the delivery of dental care for patients with special needs
C. Ethical and Legal Principles
1. Explain HIPPA regulations pertaining to the disclosure of a patient's disability
2. Review the ADAA code of ethics and describe how the code pertains to special patient populations

Course Content

Dental Assisting Theory and Practice
A. Describe and/or demonstrate adaptions in patient positioning or educational approaches, and chairside assisting techniques necessary in the performance of dental services for patients with special needs

B. Review the ADAA code of ethics and describe how the code pertains to special patient populations
