Student Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the microbiologic and nutritional factors that influence oral health, including common bacteria and their relationship to dental diseases. (75% or better)
  • Explain the causes, symptoms, modes of transmission, and control measures for common infective and contagious diseases relevant to dentistry (e.g., hepatitis, HIV, tuberculosis). (75% or better)

Description

This is the final course in a three-part series on dental science. Topics include microbiologic and nutritional factors related to dental health, pharmacology and its applications in dentistry, and the safe use of nitrous oxide in the dental setting. Students will explore the causes, symptoms, transmission, and control of infectious diseases and develop nutritional counseling techniques based on nutritional physiology. Antibiotics, psychoactive drugs, local anesthetics, and analgesic gases used in dentistry will also be covered. An emphasis will be placed on providing equitable, patient-centered care across the lifespan. Intended for students in the Dental Assisting Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

Dental Assisting Theory and Practice

  1. Explain methods by which microorganisms are transmitted, replicate, and produce disease symptoms in susceptible hosts.
  2. Describe the significant diseases along with their associated signs, symptoms, and oral manifestations.
  3. Analyze the impact of diet and nutritional deficiencies on oral health, including their role in oral diseases, the caries process, and deficiency-related conditions.
  4. Describe the uses, actions, and possible adverse reactions of the following commonly prescribed drugs in dentistry: antibiotics, analgesics, antifungal, antiviral, and anxiolytics.
  5. Identify and describe nitrous oxide-oxygen analgesia equipment, including safety features.
  6. Describe the physiological responses induced by nitrous oxide-oxygen administration.
  7. Describe the role of the dental assistant in administering nitrous oxide safely, including educating the patient.
  8. Describe the process for monitoring and supporting a patient receiving nitrous oxide-oxygen sedation.

  2. Demonstrate the application of the principles of infection control and hazardous waste management to ensure a safe environment for patients and dental health care workers.
