Student Learning Outcomes
- The student will evaluate the oral hygiene status of a patient and choose an appropriate course of action and assist the patient in achieving optimal oral hygiene. A case study scenario must be evaluated by the student and select the appropriate course of action.
- The student will be able to evaluate new oral hygiene techniques and products using credible resources and evidence based dentistry. A supplemental aid product will be researched, presented and demonstrated with 75% accuracy.

A. Dental Assisting Theory and Practice
1. describe the oral and written teaching-learning processes used in motivating the dental patient.
2. describe, in lay terms, the process of dental decay, periodontal disease and the methods of prevention.
3. explain the formation of soft and hard deposits on the tooth surfaces.
4. describe and demonstrate the various accepted methods of tooth brushing.
5. describe and demonstrate the accepted methods of interdental aids or other oral hygiene techniques.
6. describe clinical adaptations of flossing and brushing techniques.
7. identify the appropriate oral hygiene aids for restorative and prosthetic restorations.
8. list and describe the types of anti-cariogenic agents used in dentistry.
9. describe the advantages, disadvantages and systemic effects of all types of fluoride in the control of dental diseases.
10. explain the importance of dietary analysis in relationship to tooth decay.
11. describe caries risk assessment management system.
B. Infection Control and Hazardous Waste Management
1. demonstrate how to avoid cross contamination when giving oral hygiene instructions to a patient.
C. Ethical and Legal Principles
1. list and describe the accepted methods of chairside oral instruction which can be utilized to reach dental patients of various educational or socioeconomic levels.
2. recognize appropriate documentation of patient compliance or non-compliance in the treatment records.
D. Dental Assisting Program Competencies
1. Dental Assisting Theory and Practice: dental assisting students must be competent in applying the theory and practice of dental assisting for persons of all ages and abilities.
