Student Learning Outcomes

  • The student will be able to produce a diagnostic panoramic radiograph.
  • The student will be able to recognize four normal anatomical landmarks on the panoramic radiograph

Description

Last in the three quarter series of dental radiography. Intraoral technique and film evaluation skills practiced on mannequins and performed on patients. Greater emphasis on time efficiency and patient management. Digital radiography is encouraged to be used for patient care. Intended for students in the Dental Assisting Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:
A. Expose a diagnostically useful 6 film bitewing survey with no more than two retakes.
B. Expose a diagnostically useful 20 film full mouth survey with no more than four retakes.
C. Expose, on a mounted mannequin, an upper and lower occlusal film demonstrating adequate view of the area being surveyed.

A. Patient exposures of BW radiographs
1. Purpose for BW radiographs
2. Patient safety for limiting retakes
3. Horizontal vs. vertical techniques
B. Patient exposure of FM radiographs
1. Purpose for FM radiographs
2. Patient safety for limiting retakes
3. Positioning techniques not excluding DO technique
C. Maxillary and mandibular occlusal projections
1. Purpose for occlusal radiographs
2. Film size
3. Patient preparation
4. Equipment preparation
5. Vertical angulations of tubehead

Lab Content

Lab exercises include adult occlusal film exposures, panoramic film exposures, and digital periapical radiographs. The student will accomplish dental assisting skills in appointment planning, patient radiographic requirements and correct documentation for chart entry.

Special Facilities and/or Equipment

A. Gown, safety glasses, masks, and gloves.
B. X-ray laboratory, training mannequin, panoramic unit, transfer boxes, indirect digital sensors, digital sensors and digital scanner.

Grading on lab assignments
Grading on full mouth, bitewing, and panoramic images
Patient requirement completions
Quizzes

Image grading and feedback on all radiographs taken on patients
