Student Learning Outcomes

  • The student will demonstrate the configuration and use of NFS and SMB file sharing.
  • A student will be able to demonstrate the ability to use regular expressions when writing shell scripts.

Description

Advanced systems administration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Overview of automated installation, basic Linux command line usage, regular expression overview, pipelines, redirection, network configuration and troubleshooting, simple partition and filesystems creation, logical volumes, SMB and NFS network file systems, user account management, access control lists (ACLs), SELinux security overview, software package management, installed services management, log file analysis and maintenance, process management, Linux kernel tuning and maintenance, Linux troubleshooting techniques.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Explain how automated installations of Linux can be achieved
  2. Use the Linux command line
  3. Demonstrate the use and application of regular expressions, pipelines, and I/O redirection
  4. Perform network configuration and troubleshooting
  5. Explain how to create simple partitions and filesystems
  6. Demonstrate how to use logical volumes to implement flexible storage
  7. Explain and apply two protocols for access network file sharing services
  8. Manage user accounts
  9. Configure the rules necessary to control access to files
  10. Explain how to use SELinux to increase Linux security
  11. Explain and demonstrate methods for installing and managing software

  13. Explain the process of analyzing and storing logs
  14. Manage and control Linux processes

Special Facilities and/or Equipment

1. Access to a computer laboratory with current Linux based computers required to support the class.
2. A website or course management system with an assignment posting component (through which all lab assignments are to be submitted) and a forum component (where students can discuss course material and receive help from the instructor). This applies to all sections, including on-campus (i.e., face-to-face) offerings.
3. When taught via Foothill Global Access on the internet, the college will provide a fully functional and maintained course management system through which the instructor and students can interact.
4. When taught via Foothill Global Access on the internet, students must have currently existing email accounts and ongoing access to computers with internet capabilities.
