  • A student will be able to demonstrate the proper use of pipe cutting and threading tools.

Description

This course provides students with a working knowledge of soldering and brazing along with safe practices as it relates to on-the-job-training.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:
A. Recognize and classify materials used in the plumbing industry
B. Demonstrate the proper use and care of plumbing tools
C. Demonstrate assembly of piping
D. Recognize and apply on-the-job safety standards
E. Solder and braze various piping systems

Course Content

A. Materials used in the plumbing industry
1. Identification of materials
2. Selection of materials to code
3. Relationship between plan and specification
4. Material classification
B. Use and care of plumbing tools
1. Use of wrenches
2. Use of plumb bob
3. Use of hand tools
4. Cleaning tools
5. Maintaining tools
C. Shop assembly of piping
1. Soldering
2. Lead and oakum joints
3. Pipe threading
4. No-hub joint
5. Plastics
6. Compression joints/flared joints
D. Safety
1. At the work site
2. Hazardous materials
3. Forms used for OSHA
E. Solder and brazing techniques
1. Preparation of pipe and fittings
2. Applying heat to the pipe and fittings
3. Finishing soldering and brazing joints

Lab Content

A. Students will work individually and in teams on the proper use and care of plumbing tools. Soldering and brazing will also be performed. Safe working practices are reviewed
B. Safety review
C. Soldering and brazing on equipment
D. Layout of piping systems

1. Group assignment to discuss and contrast individual views of the heritage of the Unions

5. Complete end of chapter assignments from Use and Care of Tools textbook and Lab Manual
