Description

Introduction to the various methods of inserting and sleeving in residential construction. Students will practice the layout and installation of residential copper pipe and tube systems. Hands-on practice of plumbing fixture installation, service and repair will be provided.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:
A. Demonstrate piping layout methods.
B. Describe residential copper pipe and tube installations.
C. Identify residential valves and back flow devices.
D. Demonstrate installation and servicing of residential fixtures.

Course Content

A. Piping layout methods
1. Coordinate plumbing, architectural, structure, and mechanical drawings
2. Create material list
3. Demonstrate use of cut sheets and fitting books
4. Sketch a basic isometric by hand
5. Transfer a scaled drawing to an actual installation
6. Measure elevations with ruler, line, and hand level
7. Measure elevations, depth and horizontal angles using a transit or builder's level
8. Grade and align pipelines using pipe laser
B. Copper pipe and tube installation
1. Describe methods of fire prevention
2. Identify the common types of fittings used with copper tubing
3. Describe the manufacture and materials of copper pipe and copper tubing
4. Describe the types of solders used for joining copper tube
5. Describe the types of brazing filler metals used for joining copper tube
6. Describe the types of fluxes used for soldering and brazing copper tube
7. Prepare and assemble copper joints
8. Make a soldered joint and perform soldering joint test
9. Make a brazed joint and perform a brazed joint test
C. Residential valves and back flow devices
1. Identify and select the appropriate valve for a particular application
2. Install a main supply shut off valve
3. Install and/or replace a defective valve
4. Replace various valve components
5. Install a variety of valves properly
6. Install a reduced pressure back flow device
7. Install a double check valve assembly
8. Install a pressure vacuum breaker
9. Identify the purpose and function of a back flow device
10. Describe the potential hazards of not installing proper back flow prevention
D. Installation and servicing of residential plumbing fixtures
1. General safety, sanitary and Americans with Disabilities Act regulations
2. Plumbing code requirements
3. Special tools and equipment for setting fixtures
4. Select and install anchors, fasteners, backing and carriers
5. Installation procedures for plumbing fixtures, faucets and flush valves
6. Installation and code requirements for water heaters
7. Hot water return circulating pumps
8. Maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs for fixtures, faucets and flush valves
9. Maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs for water heaters
10. Drain line service

Lab Content

A. Layout drainage system
B. Install floor mounted water closet
C. Solder copper tube assembly
