Description

Study of the National Electrical Code, AC theory, and basic fundamentals of using blueprints.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Define the National Electrical Code
  2. Apply codeology to building plans and drawings
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of AC theory
  4. Demonstrate how to effectively read blueprints

  2. Codeology
    1. Plan
    2. Build

  3. AC theory
    1. Compare AC to DC current
    2. Become familiar with AC resistive circuits
    3. Understand the parameters of series AC reactive circuits
  4. Effective use of blueprints
    1. Review
    2. Layout
    3. Actual take-off
    4. Blueprint specifications
    5. Differences between wiring diagrams, line diagrams, schematics, and ladder diagrams
    6. Use of blueprints, plans, and specifications
    7. Correlate information from other trades plans with electrical plans to determine potential conflicts

Lab Content

  1. Students will demonstrate the proper safety techniques in the testing of voltage
  2. Students will demonstrate the use of blueprints to determine electrical equipment layout
  3. Students will calculate voltage drops and verify calculations through the use of voltage meters

Laboratory with electrical tools and equipment.

  2. Read chapters 1-5 in the AC Theory Student Workbook for the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC)
  3. Prepare a Codes and Practices worksheet from the Codes and Practices Student Workbook
  4. Complete chapter 6 on Code Calculations in the NJATC Student Workbook
