## Student Learning Outcomes

• The student will be able to understand and apply basic math functions to be used in daily independant living.
• The student will conduct conduct daily expenditures in order to understand the purpose of budgetting.
• The student will be able to count money and make change properly in electronic and manual environments.
• Student will devise a personal budget given personal living situation.

## Description

Emphasis on functional math concepts that include skill building for money handling exchanges, budget planning for independent living, comparison shopping strategies and other related practical math applications.

## Course Objectives

The student will be able to:
A. Demonstrate mastery of basic math functions and money handling
B. Explain bank and credit union services
C. Utilize banking and credit union services
D. Demonstrate ability to use a calculator for understanding basic math functions and problem solving relating to independent living skills
E. Explain budgeting and how to create a budget
F. Demonstrate understanding of credit cards and credit card billing
G. Distinguish the difference between credit cards, debit cards and check transactions
H. Explain and conduct comparison shopping

A. Math functions and money handling
1. Review of basic math functions

2. Banking and Credit Unions and what it means to utilize services
a. How to open account
b. Opening a checking account, savings account, retirement account
c. Making deposits and withdrawals
d. How to write a check and how to use debit services
e. Understanding interest rate charges

3. Budget planning
a. Understanding budgeting and how to create a budget for a variety of environments
b. Basic budget questions
1) Who needs to plan?
2) What is amount of money for particular budget?
3) Evaluate budget and re-valuate and adjust accordingly
4) Credit card usage
a) Understanding interest rate and finance charges
b) Understanding statements (hard copy and online)
c) Understanding credit scores
5. Comparison shopping strategies

1. Reflection essay on field trip to a Bank or Credit Union.
B. Assignment - Using Credit Cards:
1. Find the account balance from the last statement.
2. Total new purchases listed on the current statement.
3. What is the finance charge on the current statement?
4. Creation of comparison shopping on consumer product.
