Explicit instruction and practice in writing poetry and short fiction for writers of all levels. Emphasis in integrated reading and writing for literary analysis of both poetry and fiction as a process for emulating poetic and fictional elements, with a focus on contemporary writers from diverse backgrounds and worldviews. Focus on the writing process with an emphasis in developing critical feedback for peers, reflecting on one's own work, and using the writing process to generate, revise, and edit poems and short fiction stories.

This course provides instruction and practice in writing creative nonfiction, with an emphasis on integrated reading and writing. Students study and emulate published works, learn elements of craft and writing-process strategies, create original works of creative nonfiction, and participate in workshop and/or peer critique. Instruction also focuses on the history and development of the creative nonfiction genre, as well as the diverse forms within the genre, such as memoir, personal essay, lyric essay, travel writing, and literary journalism. Students read and analyze published creative nonfiction from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries to deepen their understanding of the genre, the elements of creative-nonfiction-writing craft, and the influence of cultural, historical, and institutional contexts on the production of creative nonfiction. Little to no experience in creative writing is required to enroll.

Contemporary local poets guest lecture and engage in conversation with students about process, poetics, and approach to publishing. Emphasis on ways poetry has historically created community to honor and maintain cultural knowledge and to complicate single narratives. Special emphasis on integrated reading and writing for literary analysis, including reflective and creative stylistic emulation of poets studied. Focus on sharing new work through organizing community reading and publishing class anthology.

Explicit instruction and practice in reading short fiction and writing in a variety of short fiction styles and forms. Emphasis on an integrated reading and writing process in which students study the characteristics of the genre and its history, and examine published short fiction representing diverse cultures and literary traditions, in order to compose original works of fiction informed by the history of the genre and the elements of craft found in published works. Focus on critical analysis and feedback on original works written by peers, and developing a writing process to generate, revise, and edit works of short fiction. Assignments include reading, analyzing, and responding to published works and student work, as well as writing original work. Analysis of public readings and/or interviews with authors of short fiction.
