Student Learning Outcomes

  • To relate and strengthen concepts through media, topics include oxygen therapy and vital signs
  • Support concurrent lecture and laboratory sessions through an alternative learning resource. Students will be able to explain key aspects of Pulmonary Anatomy and Physiology and Infection.

Description

First of seven courses paralleling content taught in courses in the Respiratory Therapy Program. Designed to develop and reinforce concepts taught in the concurrent lecture and laboratory sessions of the program, with a focus on hand hygiene, PPE, oxygen equipment, communication, electronic health records, patient history, teamwork, time management, patient positioning, and ethics. Media materials, simulations, and videos will provide alternative learning resources to accommodate diverse learning styles. Intended for students in the Respiratory Therapy Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proper hand hygiene.
  2. Identify personal protective equipment (PPE) and demonstrate how and when to use PPE.
  3. Identify the different types of oxygen therapy equipment.
  4. Demonstrate how to communicate effectively.
  5. Demonstrate how to navigate through electronic health records (EHR).
  6. Demonstrate how to look up a patient's history.
  7. Demonstrate effective teamwork.
  8. Demonstrate effective time management.
  9. Describe the role of ethics in health care.
  10. Demonstrate how to position patients properly.

  2. Personal protective equipment (PPE)
    1. PPE equipment
    2. The proper sequence for donning PPE
    3. The proper sequence for doffing PPE
  3. Oxygen therapy
    1. Types of oxygen administration equipment
    2. Assembly of various types of oxygen administration equipment
    3. Oxygen administration equipment based on patient conditions and evaluations
    4. Medical terminology
    5. Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) guidelines
    6. Post-procedure considerations
    7. The Patient Privacy Rule (HIPAA), Patient Safety Act, and Patient's Bill of Rights
  4. Effective communication
    1. Communication with patients in the front office
    2. Communication with patients in the back office
    3. Professional communication techniques when speaking to patients on the telephone
    4. Utilizing body language
    5. Communicate in written form
    6. Patient communication to demonstrate understanding
    7. Listening skills in a role-play or simulation exercise
    8. Self-assessment and identifying areas for improvement
    9. Communicating with co-workers using effective communication skills
    10. Effective communication with a provider
  5. Electronic health records (EHR)
    1. History and current use of patient health records, their importance to an individual's health, and their contribution to the healthcare team

  6. Patient history

    2. Obtaining and documenting patient history
    3. Nonverbal communication with the patient
    4. Correct documentation of the patient's record using the SOAP format
  7. Effective teamwork

  8. Effective time management
