  • Recognize clinical and sonographic signs of the abnormal pregnancy.
  • Describe the sonographic findings of the fetus affected by maternal complications.

Description

Second in the obstetrical course series. Continuation of DMS 55A. Includes advanced pathology related to second and third trimester obstetrics. Emphasis on fetal and maternal pathology and complications during the second and third trimester of pregnancy. Intended for students in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to:

  1. Describe the anatomy of the abnormal fetus during second and third trimester of pregnancy
  2. Describe the physiology of the abnormal fetus during second and third trimester of pregnancy
  3. Describe maternal pathology and complications during the second and third trimester of pregnancy
  4. Describe clinical signs and symptoms of fetal complications during the second and third trimester of pregnancy
  5. Describe clinical signs and symptoms of maternal complications during the second and third trimester of pregnancy
  6. Discuss the laboratory tests and findings for fetal and maternal complications during the second and third trimester of pregnancy

    7. Amniotic fluid
  3. Maternal abnormalities and complications
    1. Mullerian duct abnormalities
    2. Fibroids
  4. Clinical signs and symptoms of fetal complications
    1. Abnormal amniotic fluid volume
    2. Abnormal bleeding
  5. Clinical signs and symptoms of maternal complications
    1. Pre-term labor
    2. Vaginal bleeding
  6. Laboratory tests and findings of fetal and maternal complications

Lab Content

Assessments of sonographic protocols and procedures for the second and third trimester obstetrical patient.
